Rebecca Mongrain is an obsessive knitter, writer, foodie and photographer who happens to work in marketing at Sur La Table in Seattle. It’s not often one gets to combine her passion with her work, but she has. She likes finding the unique, unheard-of restaurants or food shops that sell the best tidbits of food. She loves photographing delicious treats and other fantastic subjects. She’s currently taking a photo a day with her iPhone and enjoying the challenge.
Kitchen Play asked Rebecca a few questions about food blogs, PR and how the two mix.
When you visit a food blog for the first time, what do you look for or notice?
When visiting a food blog or any blog for the first time, I almost always check out the photos. Photos, not eyes, really are the window to the soul, and I feel as if I can understand a blog when I see its photos. Of course great writing always wins me over. If a site is flashy and well-designed but the content isn’t quite engaging, then I’ll move on. Well-written sites always draw me in and those are the sites I visit again and again.
When choosing a food blogger as a business partner, what criteria is most important? (i.e. Hard statistics such as unique visitors and Page rank, “soft” impressions such as that person’s voice and recipe development, or the visual power of their blog’s graphics and layout.)
When choosing a food blogger as a business partner, I rely much more on “soft” impressions than hard statistics. While statistics are very important, if bloggers aren’t easy to work with, then I’m not inclined to work with them.
What do you love about working in Public Relations/Marketing for Sur La Table?
I love working in public relations and marketing at Sur La Table because I get to talk about food all day. I love the hallway conversations about different kinds of salt, finding out where people had the best meals of their lives and learning about cooking every single day. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to combine my passion with my job.
